How to Use Gambling Slang
Gambling is a very popular game and has been so for centuries. It has grown from one stage to the next, now being housed indoors in casinos. People wager on animals, teams, people, games and lotteries. They play poker, slot machines, horse racing, or even sports betting. This business makes billions of dollars based on the amount of people who invest in these games and the controls that gambling establishments put in place to have the advantage of their patrons. From the very earliest times of man, people used to cast lots. This was even mentioned in the bible, when the soldiers cast lots for Jesus' cloak. Now over the years people have also defined and come up with terms to refer to certain people, games or actions in gambling. Only those advanced or seasoned players would be familiar with these gambling slangs. A new comer would not know what they mean and often would be at an advantage in the game. Therefore if you want to be successful in gambling, it is important to know what the terms mean.
Gambling is a sport, previously mostly made up of male players. It is very easy to jest and joke around when playing. This technique helps to throw less seasoned players of their games. Letting them feel at a disadvantage and they will then make a bad play. Some fights have been known to start this way; because men have egos and refuse to be made fun off. But others understand the strategy for what it is and ignore it. One of the terms that have been used, from a long time, is 'fish'. This term has a different and derogatory meaning in many cultures, but in a gambling environment it refers to the loser in the game. Many believe that came about in possibly a fishing village or the like, where they made fun of the loser as a rotten or spoilt fish. It is human nature not to want to be in the company of such as thing or person, in this case. At a gambling establishment, people are typically superstitious believing in good luck and bad luck; therefore if someone is described as a fish, then people would not want to be around them. They believe if they do, their luck would change for the worse.
Another term is 'eye in the sky'. To some people this is clear, to others not so. Even outside of the gambling world, people automatically know what this implies. 'Eye in the sky' often refers to a monitoring or camera surveillance system. There are numerous attempts daily to cheat. People are always trying to do little tricks, individually or as a group to win their games; therefore camera systems are a common feature in places like casinos. But the camera system is not the only thing they use; people, guards, or experts are always watching players. Many players do not sit at 'first base' at a blackjack table. It is not that it is a worst position to be than the others, they might just not prefer to be the first person who is dealt their cards as they think it is unlucky. In gaming 'hot' is lucky, the opposite of being a fish.
